What is a Daring Community?
New this year, a Daring Community works together to organize, mobilize, and inspire their town or city to do Dares and fundraise through A Dare to Remember.
A Daring Community understands the power that comes with working together. Just as community-based projects in sub-Saharan Africa are doing extraordinary work to turn the tide of AIDS, so community-based fundraising in Canada will support local African responses to the pandemic.
Start a Daring Community Team to recruit people to do Dares and donate to Dares. Make connections and build bridges throughout your community, by contacting local media, recruiting community leaders, and inviting schools, businesses, churches, unions and more to get involved.
All you need is the passion to turn the tide of AIDS in Africa, and a willingness to reach out to others and invite them to join the movement!
How do I get started?
It’s easy, and we have lots of resources to help you get started. Call or email Healy Thompson, Dare Organizer at the Stephen Lewis Foundation, to learn more – 1-888-203-9990, ext. 252 or hthompson@stephenlewisfoundation.org. We’ll also let you know who else in your community is daring!
Some Community Dares...
Daring Communities are new to A Dare to Remember in 2010, but some Darers are already working to mobilize their communities!
For example, Deby Johnston of Ingonish, NS is daring the rest of Nova Scotia to join her in A Dare to Run.
Last year, Deby ran a half-marathon every day for 14 days. Starting on World AIDS Day, December 1st, she ran the entire length of the Cabot Trail and raised more than $12,000. This year, Deby is daring other Nova Scotia runners to join her in an effort to have Darers run the entire length of Nova Scotia on World AIDS Day (in half-marathon increments).
Deby has started to build her community team and recruit daring runners.
